Lost in the Park – Mr. Orion’s House v2

Version 2

What I completed:

I have created a shed and placed a Gazebo into my level. I have also placed temporary walls that will keep the player within the area I wish for them to be. I have also instituted GUI messages to appear when these walls are reached to say what will happen in the game. I did use a blood texture to paint a blood smear that leads into the backyard that will lead the player to the shed. I have placed a light fixture into the shed and a few tables along with a pair of Gary’s military boots. I also replaced the 2D bird sound with a few different bird calls that would be native to the mid-Atlantic coast. I placed audio sources into a few of the trees for the bird sounds so that in those with surround sound headphones it will sound as if it is coming from above. I also got rid of some of the grass that was out of place on the mountain. I have adjusted the height of the first person controller but I have yet to find a good place for the camera.

What I didn’t have time to do:

I did not have time to find an appropriate main house but I am very close to completing one in 3ds Max. I also have not figure out the animation for the door in the shed yet as well as getting the color for the textures on the shed correct.

Next build:

I would like to get the house in place as well as the fix the animation (and the color) for the door on the shed, create a mini-game for the opening of the fence (something involving a dog), get the various inventory items (I plan on using a pre-built inventory engine). I will also get the transitions working to swap scenes with my team members’ scenes.

Mr. Orion’s House

House Level by Bret Lowe

Setting – It is a little before noon on an early fall day. The sun is out and it is a comfortable 76 degrees with low humidity. The sun filters through the trees giving a gentle diffused light in the park. The house is one that backs up to the state park with a trail that runs along the southern side of the property’s fence.

The park has some gently sloping hills throughout and south of the path is a large mountainous area. The trail runs up the mountain to an elevation of about 40 feet and ends in a scenic overlook of the park. A fenced off section of land is a wildlife preserve and borders the property to the north.

The property’s fence is 2.5 meters tall and surrounds a perimeter of about 23 meters by 35 meters, the house, which is roughly 18m, 7m, extends east of the fence by 3 meters. Mr. Orion has just moved in and the interior of the house, which is only viewable through windows because all the doors are locked, are many unpacked boxes. Within the fence contain the following structures: Gazebo, Deck, patio/rock platform at the bottom of the stairs from the deck, a “shed” where taxidermy occurs, a penned in area for the dog. The interior of the house is lit by standing fluorescent overhead lights.

The shed interior is unfinished, exposed beams with a couple of hanging incandescent lights for illumination. In the shed is a prep table, freezer, and a chest with various implements of taxidermy. Old animal blood is dried on the floor and table. There is a mostly opaque sheet that is hanging up in front of the table that obscures the view of the table from the windows.

Backtracking is allowed and the player can get an end game state if they choose to continue through the trail to the east. The player is warned, through the characters internal monologue, that she will head back to her car, around the perimeter of the park, and leave Billy in the park and the finale will be determined based upon what Gina has accomplished so far.

Quests

–        A small blood trail leads from the Trail level (Tracy) to the gate at the west end of the fence (leading Gina to think that Billy was wounded and came this way).

–        Gina can’t see through the fence but hears a dog on the other side barking. She needs to find a way to get a higher vantage point and see into the yard.

–        The scenic overlook on the mountain is high enough to see into the yard and determine if the dog is out and every 20 or so seconds see Mr. Orion traverse from the Shed to the house (and vice versa).

–        A key from the Field level (Jeremy) is needed to open the back gate.

–        Food is needed to lure the dog into the fence and close it to prevent the dog from attacking you (and causing a game over).

–        Mr. Orion needs to be removed from the area which is done by providing evidence to the Park Police that he has been hunting in the park illegally.

–        Blood trail leads into the shed. Through the windows a set of dog tags and pair of black combat boots can be seen. The prep table is obscured by a sheet and this makes Gina think that Billy is in there.

Lost in the Woods (tentative title)

Well, my Team and I just finished our first week’s assignment for the Building game worlds class. I like our story and our level designs are showing showing promise.
Here are some of our level designs:
